Good Morning Church

Today is the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. I am sure you remember where you were when you heard the news of the Twin Towers. When I first came to Oklahoma, I worked as a museum curator. Our volunteers were older adults- they had been teenagers and young adults during World War II. They could all remember the attack on Pearl Harbor. My generation remembers 9/11. I was a new mom with a three-month-old baby. I was getting her ready for us to leave for Okmulgee, where I was the youth pastor, when a George called and told me the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I turned on the TV just as the 2nd tower was hit. I went to work. We had youth group that night. It was a lot for adults and youth to process. One youth had a mother who worked in the Pentagon. My brother was part of a Marine Expeditionary Force on a ship at sea. The world seemed so uncertain and scary that day and in the weeks ahead. The only thing that was certain was that God was there in the midst of it all. The following day, I gathered with complete strangers at our church for a noon prayer service. It was packed.  I held my oldest Bessie in my arms during the service. Everyone came by, smiled, and cooed at her. Her little innocent face represented the promise of God's hope and the future.  I hope this weekend you take a few moments to reflect on 9/11 and God's faithfulness. I hope the reflection gives you time to remember God's hope for his people and our world. On 9/11, we were a united people. I pray for the unity of our country and our world this week as we remember.
